From Glass to PET
for The Barbecue Company
The Barbecue Company was faced with the challenge of finding a better solution for its glass bottle, which was heavy, fragile and difficult to handle both in production and in transport, so together we developed a custom PET bottle that retained the bottle's stylish design and premium feel, but with better functionality, resulting in a lighter, more durable and user-friendly bottle that was also more cost-effective to produce and transport.
About The Barbecue Company
The Barbecue Company is a Swedish food company that specializes in authentic American barbecue made in Sweden. The company was founded in 1995 in Saltsjö-Boo by brothers Jonas and Robert Lundin after inspiration from the southern United States' barbecue culture. Today, the company is a pioneer and market leader in Swedish barbecue and has, among other things, won double gold in the international sauce competition Scovie Awards for its Mackmyra barbecue sauce.
The challenge
The Barbecue Company used to have a traditional glass bottle for its sauces. This packaging had a nice design that suited the company's products and brand, but unfortunately it came with several practical drawbacks. Among other things, it was heavy and fragile, difficult to empty and difficult to handle in production and transport. The Barbecue Company therefore needed a new bottle that solved all these problems without losing the feel of a premium product.
Our solution
Together with the customer, we developed a PET bottle with high transparency that mimicked the appearance of the glass. The material PET offered advantages such as lighter weight and less fragility, but while maintaining volume and appearance. Through renderings and prototypes, we developed our own tool to make the bottle as similar to the glass original as possible, while at the same time making it more functional in production, during transport and for end users.
The result
The transition from glass to PET brought a number of different benefits such as:
Lower weight resulting in lower costs and emissions during transport
A more user-friendly packaging that is easier to empty and provides good precision with a flip-top cap
Less fragility for easier handling during production and transport
Minimal visual difference in store compared to previous glass bottle
We wanted to create a more practical, cost-effective and user-friendly bottle without losing the premium feel of the glass, and the result exceeded our expectations. The new bottle works better at all stages and our customers see no difference compared to the previous glass bottle.
